The representative body of the Sámi in Norway, the Sámi Parliament (Sámediggi/ Sametinget), was founded in 1987 (Act 1987:56) and began operating in 1989. The central administration of the Sámi Parliament is located in Karasjoki, in a new parliament building which was inaugurated in November 2000.

The representative body of the Sámi in Sweden, the Sámi Parliament (Sámediggi/ Sametinget), was founded in 1992 (Act 1992: 1433) and began operating at the beginning of 1993. The central administration of the Sámi Parliament is located in the centre of the city of Kiiruna.
