Niko Valkeapää to headline Ijahis idja on the festival's 10th anniversary PDF Print
The Music Festival of Indigenous Peoples, Ijahis idja (Nightless Night) will celebrate its tenth anniversary on 16 – 18 August 2013, in the village of Inari. The headliner of this year's festival is Niko Valkeapää and his band.

Valkeapää is a Sámi artist of international renown who recently (2012) released two new albums, Gusto and ÄÄ. Valkeapää's music captivates the listener with its beautiful melodies, catchy guitar riffs and lyrics addressing contemporary issues. At Ijahis idja, Niko Valkeapää and his band will give a full-length concert, starting at 8 pm at the Auditorium of Sajos Sámi Cultural Centre, on Friday, 16 August.

 

Ijahis idja is celebrating its 10th anniversary with its most diverse programme ever.The Generations theme is reflected in the 10th anniversary show, which is flanked by several other concerts presenting a variety of Sámi artists. A delegation of indigenous people from the Chukotka region in Siberia will visit this event. Traditional joiku, livđe and leuddi will also be heard at the festival. The special programme for children and teenagers includes music workshops and other guided activities. Open to the general public, the traditional Ijahis idja music seminar will be held at the Sámi Museum Siida. The festival clubs will provide additional flavour by focusing on Sámi youth culture. A detailed Ijahis idja schedule will be announced in June.

 

Ijahis idja is jointly organised by Anára Sámisearvi ry, the Sámi Parliament, the Sámi Education Institute, Sámi Museum Siida, the Giellagas Institute, the municipality of Inari, the Lapland division of the Arts Promotion Centre Finland, Yle Sápmi, Hotel Kultahovi and Restaurant Galla.
