Child benefit is a kind of benefit that is paid for all children under the age of 18 years who live in Norway. The purpose of child benefit is to help cover the costs of raising children. Single parents are entitled to child benefit for one child more than they actually live with (extended child benefit).
To receive child benefit, your child must live in Norway. A child is generally regarded as living in Norway if he or she has been in Norway for at least 12 consecutive months. There are exceptions to this rule. Read more about child benefit during stays in EEA countries under the heading International in the menu to the right.

Child benefit is a tax-free benefit and is paid out once a month.
You are entitled to receive child benefit from the month after the child is born or from the month after you qualify, if entitlement to child benefit arises at a later date. Child benefit is paid out until the month before the child’s 18th birthday.
Child benefit can be paid in arrears for up to three years from the date of application if the conditions are satisfied.
Most people do not need to apply for child benefit. If the child was born in Norway, the mother is automatically granted entitlement to child benefit from NAV roughly two months after the child is born. You must inform your local NAV office if you want child benefit to be paid to the father.
