The Sámi Museum Siida, the Skolt Sámi Cultural Foundation and Sevettijärvi School arrange together an Autumn Festival by the Heritage House on Thursday, 8 September.

day starts with a competition on throwing the Sámi lasso, arranged by the Skolt Sámi Cultural Foundation. During the day, the pupils of Sevettijärvi School run a café on the premises, and bread will be baked in the open-air oven at noon. There will also be a flea market where anyone can sell their goods. Those interested should bring their own table. During the day, craftsmakers Heini Wesslin and Mirva Haataja show how root- and beadwork are made, pupils dance the Quadrille, and Hanna Maaria Kiprianoff sings, or leu’dds, in the Skolt Sámi way.

The exhibition and the open-air museum of the Skolt Sámi Heritage House introduce visitors to Skolt Sámi culture and history. This year, the exhibition also displays a root-sewn boat that was built last autumn; the boat was made using a traditional Skolt Sámi crafts technique of fastening parts together with the help of roots. During the Autumn Festival, the audience can try rowing this traditional boat on Peuralampi, a nearby pond, and ask about the building process from Arttu Niemenmaa.

The Autumn Festival is one of the last public events of the summer in Sevettijärvi. On the following weekend, the Skolt Sámi Cultural Foundation will arrange a plant dyeing course by the Heritage House for those interested in the theme.

The Skolt Sámi Heritage House is open daily from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. until 25 September. In addition to the exhibition, there is also a small museum shop at the Heritage House.

Welcome!
