Exhibition Celebrates the 60th Anniversary of Lemmenjoki National Park

May 11, 2016 09:55 AM

The largest national park of Finland and Europe has its 60th anniversary this year. To celebrate this, the Sámi Museum and Northern Lapland Nature Centre Siida have produced an exhibition on the Lemmenjoki National Park at Siida, Inari.

The Lemmenjoki exhibition introduces the audience to the varied natural conditions, history and use of the area. Unique nature, Sámi culture and gold prospecting have given Lemmenjoki distinct features, making it still a vigorous place where traditional and contemporary livelihoods meet.

The Lemmenjoki National Park is annually visited by approximately 12,000 hikers and outdoor enthusiasts, and the area is also used by reindeer herders and gold prospectors, for example. In the exhibition the multifaceted character of the national park is spotlighted through the history of the area but also through the present sources of livelihood. In addition, the exhibition provides information on reindeer husbandry, gold prospecting and the natural diversity of the park.

The exhibition makes use of many new and old photographs, but it also presents film material both from decades ago and the recent times. The exhibition also caters for children, offering them their special Lemmenjoki landscape in the lower part of the exhibition.

The exhibition is part of the programme of the park’s 60th anniversary. More information on the anniversary celebrations is available on Siida’s website.

The Lemmenjoki exhibition is open at the Sámi Museum and Northern Lapland Nature Centre Siida in Inari from 11 May to 4 September 2016.
