Siida – Sámi Museum and Nature Centre grants free entrance to Siida’s exhibitions for the babies born in the municipalities of Inari and Utsjoki in 2015 and for their families. The gift vouchers for free entry will be distributed to the families with the help of the maternity clinic of the municipality of Inari and the public health nurses of the municipality of Utsjoki.

The gift voucher makes it easy for the families with newly born babies to visit Siida’s exhibitions. The voucher is valid for a year from the birth of the baby and entitles the family to one free entry to Siida. This way Siida wants to welcome families with babies to learn more about local history and Sámi culture and the natural conditions of the region.

“We want to cater for the families with children in our municipalities and welcome them to Siida”, says Deputy Museum Director Sari Valkonen. This way new family members are introduced to culture and nature at an early age. At kindergarten age, visits to Siida will continue as part of the activities of day-care centres. For schoolchildren, the Sámi Museum and Northern Lapland Nature Centre Siida provides activities, workshops and other events in cooperation with schools. The pupils of the municipality of Inari have free entrance to Siida. Siida also does cooperation with the Mannerheim League for Child Welfare (MLL).

Siida offers a variety of things to look at and to admire for children and young people.  The exhibitions offer many things to view at the level of small children’s eyes.  In the main exhibition, one can admire how the bear sleeps through the winter and how tiny the new-born cubs are. One can also learn more about how to make reindeer fur boots and shoe grass. An adult, too, is fascinated by the diversity of things displayed in Siida.

“Siida is not only for travellers. We would like to see as many residents of Inari and Utsjoki as possible visiting Siida. Our changing and diverse exhibitions guarantee that people have something new to look at and experience during every visit”, say Sari Valkonen and Nature Centre Manager Kirsi Ukkonen from Siida.
