Sámi Cultural Environment Unit becomes part of Sámi Museum Siida’s permanent activities

Feb 11, 2015 11:22 AM

In its meeting on 12 February 2015, the Board of the Sámi Museum Foundation decided to declare the posts of an archaeologist and a researcher in the Cultural Environment Unit vacant. The Sámi Museum Siida has been granted a state subsidy of two extra man-years by the Ministry of Education and Culture in order to make the Cultural Environment Unit permanently part of the Museum. The decision of the Ministry is welcomed by the Sámi Museum Siida. The Cultural Environment Unit that was established under the auspices of the Sámi Museum in 2011 has so far relied on project funds in its operations.

The Cultural Environment Unit is responsible for the official tasks connected with the archaeological heritage of the Sámi Area; in this work, the Unit follows the cooperation contract between the Finnish Board of Antiquities and the Sámi Museum. These tasks include matters dealing with land plans and other uses of land, statements and inspections at the sites, the receiving and registering of objects found and observations made in the Sámi Area, and the management of ancient monuments and sites.

In addition to the official tasks dealing with the archaeological heritage, the Sámi Museum is ready to take upon it the official tasks dealing with the built heritage of the Sámi Area.

The Cultural Environment Unit has created the book Ealli biras – Elävä ympäristö (“Ealli biras – The Living Environment”) that was chosen the 2014 Local Heritage Book at the Turku International Book Fair this year. At present, the Unit is about to finish an inventory update of nationally valuable landscapes in the Sámi Area.

Finding a way of continuing the operations of the Sámi Cultural Environment Unit has been one of the main goals of the Sámi Museum. We at the Sámi Museum are pleased now that the goal has been achieved and want to thank all our partners who have supported us in this matter.
