Study Paths exhibition looks at the study programme of Sámi Education Institute

May 09, 2017 01:10 PM

Through the stories of its students, the Study Paths exhibition at Siida introduces the public to the school, its study programmes and its unique position as the only Sámi vocational school in Finland. The exhibition will be open for the public from 31 May to 1 October 2017.

The Study Paths exhibition displays students’ stories and handicrafts and other works such as photos and videos made by them during the studies.

The Sámi Education Institute started its operations in 1978 by teaching handicrafts. In the course of almost forty years, the school has expanded its course programme to cover fields that boost the area economically, that is, reindeer husbandry, tourism, other services and the media. In addition, the school provides courses in all the Sámi languages spoken in Finland: North Sámi, Inari Sámi and Skolt Sámi.

The courses provided in Sámi handicrafts are still the line of the institute – a rewarding one for the students.

– We’ve come from different parts of Finland to study Sámi handicrafts – its hard materials – at the Sámi Education Institute. The great thing about crafting is that you can see what you’ve produced with your own hands. We’re now in the right place at the right time, taught by awesome teachers, the students studying hard materials tell in the Study Paths exhibition.

The Study Paths exhibition has been produced jointly by the Sámi Education Institute and the Sámi Museum Siida.

The Sámi Education Institute has also produced extra material online as part of the exhibition. Follow the study path at www.sogsakk.fi/oahppobalgat to look at other students’ stories, visual material and handicrafts.
