Wild Fells Music Seminar in Sámi Museum Siida on 15 August 2015 from noon to 2 p.m.
Jul 30, 2015 08:58 AMThis year, Indigenous Peoples’ Music Festival Ijahis idja delights the audience with music on the theme of Wild Fells. The theme is also the focus of the Ijahis Idja Music Seminar – already a tradition – as the audience will be introduced, by the artists themselves, to the music and artists of the north-western corner of Finland, the Käsivarsi region. The speakers will deal with the yoiking tradition of the Käsivarsi area, the importance of yoiking, and the ways of performing it, both traditionally and in a modern way.
Wimme, a yoiker and sound artist from Enontekiö, combines different ways of yoiking with modern singing techniques in his music. In his address, Wimme will deal with his long career that has been based on the yoiking tradition of his home region, Enontekiö. He will also tell about performing yoiks in different situations.
Biret Ristin Sara from Karasjok, Norway, masters both the traditional and new ways of yoiking. She is also the chair of the Nordic yoikers’ association Juoigiid searvi, which arranged a discussion on the invisible values of the Yoik and Sámi music in spring 2015. In her address, Sara will tell about the yield of the discussion and the values transmitted by yoiking.
Yoik artist Inga-Máret Gaup-Juuso from Karesuvanto is at present working on her first album, which will combine traditional and new ways of yoiking with pop music. She will deal with her communion with yoiking: how she grew up with yoiking and how yoiks can be performed, both traditionally and in a modern way.
The seminar will end with the address of Oarjánnieiddat, a group of young yoikers from Karesuvanto consisting of sisters Inger-Anni and Máret-Elle Valkeapää, and Maren Elle Mäkitalo. Guided by their teacher Anna-Reetta Niemelä, they have looked for old yoiks in archives. This search has also inspired them to perform yoiks. At the seminar, we will also hear a greeting from Anna-Reetta Niemelä in which she will tell about teaching and learning how to yoik.
The Wild Fells Music Seminar is arranged by the Sámi Museum Siida, and it is free for everyone. The seminar will be held in North Sámi and Finnish, with interpretation available. Welcome!
