Torunn Pettersen holds a PhD in health sciences (UiT The Arctic University of Norway, 2015). She has a second level degree ("hovedfag") in political science (UiT, 1998) and a three-year education as a librarian (Statens bibliotekhøgskole, 1983). Since 1989, she has had various positions at Sámi allaskuvla / Sámi University of Applied Sciences, including a position at the former Sámi Instituhtta / Nordic Sámi Institute.
Currently, she works as a researcher (part-time) at the Department of Social Sciences. This spring semester (2017), she also serves as the Vice-Dean of the department (01.01.-31.07.17, 20 % position).
Research interests:

Terms and conditions for knowledge building and opinion formation on Sámi issues – especially aspects of the collection and use of ethnicity data in general and Sámi/indigenous (official) statistics in particular.

Health and living conditions among the Sámi and other indigenous peoples.

The Sámediggi elections – especially aspects of the Sámediggi electoral roll in Norway, as well as gender-related aspects.
