!!! People: Ryan Johnson

Ryan Johnson is an MA candidate at the University of Tromsø, who has worked
with Giellatekno since 2012. Ryan has a BA in Linguistics from the University
of Minnesota (Twin Cities), and presently lives in Minneapolis.

''Neahttadigisánit'' (''NDS'') is a robust, web-based dictionary service that combines
morphological resources (usually in form of FSTs) with lexical resources, to
provide a user-friendly and mobile-friendly dictionary for any language. ''NDS''
will recognize a variety of user inputs beyond simple "dictionary forms" of
words: users may write non-standard forms, or any morphologial form that the
FST recognizes, and this will be connected with a relevant lexical entry.

The service is also able to return morphological paradigms, multiple
orthographic variants, multimedia, and contains a click-to-read service, which
allows users to look up words on any website, and read without looking away.

''NDS'' began as a simple means for students using *Kursa* to look up words without
leaving the page, but instead became a general service for the same on any
website. NDS is extendable for other languages, and provides many ways to
customize the data that is displayed to end users. The main interface of ''NDS'' is
also fully translateable, so that users are able to experience the dictionary
in their language.

[Gïelese|http://gielese.no], lead programmer: ''Gïelese'' is a media-rich application for South
Saami, available on the web and on mobile app stores for iOS and Android. It is
data driven, based on the same morphological and lexical resources that are
used for other Giellatekno applications: ''Oahpa'', and ''NDS''. ''Gïelese'' was created in
collaboration with [Aajege|http://aajege.no/] and [Divvun|http://divvun.no/].

! Oahpa! / Kursa

[Oahpa!|http://oahpa.no], maintainer: Ryan works on feature requests and bugfixes for
some of the languages within ''Oahpa''. Ryan also supports [Kursa|http://kursa.oahpa.no],
a WordPress site which hosts lesson-based, multimedia-rich material connected to
''Oahpa!''.

!! Miscellaneous

Ryan spends his freetime playing Irish traditional music in various capacities
around Minneapolis/St. Paul, on flute and piano. Ryan also enjoys freeing
public data from the clutches of PDFs, and mapping it using Geographical
Information Systems data.
