Children and young people

The Ministry of Children, Equality and Social Inclusion is responsible for the overriding sector policy for children and young people.

Children and young people must have good and safe conditions for their early development. They must have the same opportunities. Important areas of focus include counteracting marginalisation, contributing to levelling differences in living conditions and promoting the participation and influence of children and young people in various social arenas. Various Ministries and other state agencies, the municipal sector and voluntary organisations for children and young people work together to reach these objectives.

Early development and living conditions of children and youth

Good conditions for early development and good living conditions for children and young people are high priority areas for the Government. Everyone must have equal opportunities. Important areas of focus include counteracting marginalisation, contributing to levelling differences in living conditions and promoting the participation and influence of children and young people in all areas of society.

The participation and influence of children and young people

The main focus of the Ministry of Children, Equality and Social Inclusion is on the rights of children and young people to influence their own day-to-day lives and social development. The Ministry promotes these rights through its contact with and support of local authorities, public agencies and NGOs. Stimulating the exchange of ideas and experiences is an important part of this work.

The UN Convention on the Rights of the Child

The UN Convention on the Rights of the Child was adopted by the UN General Assembly on 20 November 1989 and ratified by Norway on 8 January 1991. On 1 October 2003, the Convention on the Rights of the Child was incorporated into Norwegian law.
