History – The first Ministry

In 1814 the Ministry of Church and Education was the first to be established, and was designated "the First Ministry". It was followed by the Ministry of Justice, the Ministry of Police, the Ministry of Internal Affairs, the Ministry of Finance and Customs and the Ministry of War.

 

In 1982 the Ministry was divided in two, and responsibility for cultural affairs, higher education and research was transferred to a new Ministry of Cultural and Scientific Affairs. Following further reorganisation, the Ministry was from 1 January 1991 renamed "the Ministry of Education, Research and Church Affairs".

The history of the Ministry is recorded in "The Handbook of the National Archives of Norway", The Ministry of Church and Education 1819-.
