The Department of Integration and Diversity works with integration and social inclusion policy targeted towards the immigrant population.
The department is responsible for refugee settlement, training in Norwegian language and society and qualification for participation in the work force and/or education through the introductory programme for newly arrived adult immigrants, as well as interpretation services. The department administers the Norwegian Nationality Act. Additionally, the department works to promote equal opportunities for all to participate in Norwegian society and conducts a dialogue with non-governmental organisations and religious communities.
The principle of mainstreaming integration policy entails that the authorities in the various sectors and public administrative levels have the same responsibilities for individuals with immigrant backgrounds as for the population at large within their specific areas. The department is tasked with developing and coordinating policy in this area. Specific targets have been set in order to measure developments relating to integration of immigrants and their children over time.
